AI in Interior Design: Why Human Insight Matters More Than Ever

As AI becomes more visible in the world of interior design, it is naturally prompting conversation. Its appeal is clear. It offers speed, efficiency, and the ability to generate visual ideas within moments.

At Susan Chesney Interior Designers, we recognise its value. Used thoughtfully, it can support parts of the design process, helping to explore ideas, test directions, and bring early concepts into focus.

Even so, previous clients have asked us whether we worry about AI taking our jobs.

The truth is, we do not.

If anything, its rise has only reinforced what has always set thoughtful design apart. A well-designed home is not simply the result of quick ideas or polished visuals. It comes from understanding people, reading nuance, and shaping spaces with care. That kind of sensitivity cannot be automated.

A Helpful Tool, Not a Substitute for Design Expertise

There is certainly a place for AI in modern design. It can assist with layouts, offer visual references, and help streamline the early stages of concept development. As part of a broader toolkit, it can be both useful and efficient.

But tools can only take a project so far.

They can present options, but they cannot judge what feels calm, balanced, or quietly right for a particular client. They cannot interpret the atmosphere a home should hold, or the subtle ways a space needs to support daily life.

Good interior design is never just about appearance. It is about how a home feels to live in.

Design Begins with People

Before any scheme takes shape, there is a person, or a family, at the centre of it. Their routines, priorities, habits, and way of living are what give direction to the design.

This is where experience matters most.

The real work lies in listening carefully, noticing what is said and what is not, and understanding how someone wants to feel in their home. Often, the most important details are the hardest to articulate. They reveal themselves gradually, through conversation, observation, and trust.

That level of understanding is what gives an interior its depth. It is also what makes the process so distinctly human.

The Value of Nuance

The most successful interiors are not simply beautiful. They feel settled, intuitive, and deeply personal.

That comes from nuance. From the way natural light moves through a room. From the balance between openness and comfort. From knowing when a space needs softness, restraint, warmth, or structure.

These choices are shaped by instinct and experience. They are refined through an understanding of proportion, texture, atmosphere, and the everyday realities of how a home is used.

AI may assist with ideas, but it cannot walk into a room and sense what is missing. It cannot build rapport with a client or translate emotion into a space that feels entirely their own.

Our Perspective

We welcome innovation where it adds genuine value. We are always open to tools that can bring clarity, support creativity, and enhance the design journey.

But our work remains rooted in people.

Because for all that technology can offer, the essence of interior design still lies in interpretation, instinct, and care. It is this that gives a home character, ease, and a sense of belonging.

AI may become part of the process, but it is the human element that turns a space into something meaningful, and that matters more than ever.
